MPP14 – Rafter Cassettes (Port Macquarie, NSW) – May 2019
Just recently, Eastlands Frame & Truss had a plan which included a reasonably sized raked ceiling area using LVL rafters. Partnering with Meyer Timber, they got Tom to detail the roof in cassette form, and the rafters were precision cut on the Hundegger, including birdsmouth and reduction cuts for the overhang. Eastlands F&T then assembled the cassettes, which were installed in only 20 minutes!

Over the past couple of months Meyer Timber has been working hard in delivering a Qikpanel floor system to a 64-unit development in Victoria. This involves a patented system using inverted T-joists which are chemically bonded directly to the flooring to create strong but lightweight floor panels. Plumbing and ducting holes have been pre-cut into the panels and shower areas are recessed as well.

Zac Homes took part in a trial of cassette floors for two of their double storey houses. It was done using stressed skin floor cassettes, where the flooring is bonded to the joists and essentially becomes like the top flange of an I-joist. The first job was a steep learning experience for all but the second one saw 6 panels installed in under an hour.

Eastlands F&T did a job this month in Lismore which involved cassette floors for 6 units. This was detailed by Tom in our Sydney office, cut to length on the Hundegger and delivered to Eastlands yard at Port Macquarie. They manufactured to Toms production drawings, put it on a truck to Lismore and arranged the install. When we got to site there were core filled block walls that were 90mm out of parallel and other issues which cased a couple of initial headaches. But once the installation process started they had 4 units installed with first floor frames craned up as well in under 4 hours. A credit to all involved and the main learning here was to allow a bit more time in future for the whole process.

See the Project Profile attached, where a gable truss Merbau pergola was fully machined by Meyer Timber. The structure install time reduced from 3 days to ½ day which is a great outcome for both the installer and the home owner. Talk to us for more information.

Have a look at the 49° LVL roof project profile recently completed in NSW. This is an impressive build with the longest rafter being just under 13.2m. It is restrained and supported by first floor joists, then first floor walls, then loft joists/collar ties, then loft walls, then an upper collar tie before finally hitting the ridge board. And credit to the carpenters as it was all cut to size on the ground!
